hello from Ottawa

Issie is the champion speller in the Middle school, she tried hard not to win and mispelt 2 words but still won, she will go through to the next stage against other schools, there are some very difficult words on the list! i think only asian canadians win!
Glad that you are having fun in Sydney, it is a very nice city and I would love to take the kids as they would enjoy it, Not much news here, Michael is due to go to WHistler next week skiing for a few days with a good friend from Seattle who now lives in Atlanta but he won't go if the snow is bad. You can leave on wednesday afternoon get up to Whistler by midnight, ski for 4 days and come home on monday. He even bought some new ski's for the occasion.
The snow has been melting but tomorrow the temp drops to -14 during the day and -19 at night. Both Adam and Anna are doing exams, Issie made the badminton team so she is at school at 7am 2 mornings a week.
Spoke to Phil yesterday who sounded well
love Angela

Australia Day

we were unfortunately jaded after flight and temperate change to 30+ but we still enjoyed the buzz - Sydney is a fantastic experience and never fails to impress - infectious.

The place was alive with street market here in Rocks and stages with pop concerts in all the parks . We couldn't get back to the cottage as there was a Samoan Christian choir across the street singing and dancing.

Chris will remember - literally hundreds of events from Tall ships to air display and firework display. Patriotism high as everyone was wearing Aussie T shirts including kids with national flag.

We again went out about midnight and there we people about with babies in prams and others sitting on grass opposite Opera House in glorious weather - a few fell in harbour and had to be rescued by police. The Manley ferry appeared to be full and running late after midnight.

There are plenty of God's creatures here - you have to wear shoes in kitchen due to cockroaches dead or alive as well as ants and the mosquito's - i am like a pin cushion and your ma has none!

The neighbours are friendly - the chap next door was a " 5 pound pommie" as my father in 50's but my mother would not leave granny and Mary. He was a glass engraver but interesting as all expats want to speak about is England and their youth and families . He is going over to UK Hackney for family wedding and said the couple were coming to Australia on honeymoon - they are returning together on the same plane.

June is coming over for coffee this morning so we shall go out as there are many within a few minutes of here .

Your ma is sticking to salad diet and we go for strenuous walks daily. Should be quick results!

We get BBC world news and weather in Ottawa today -14 - it is much warmer in Seattle -in fact there is a shortage of snow for winter Olympic in Vancouver - too much in Europe .

We are enjoying tennis from Melbourne .

Were off folks 23rd Jan 2010

Chris telephoned to say bon voyage and as i said , we were taken by James to Manchester airport - very nice of him - and there was a major security alert as someone was arrested at T3,where we were due to use as BA terminal - the place was chaos and closed down . Hence we had to trudge over to T1 on foot and check in followed by security makes you wonder why anyone flies .

Interesting as there was a news blackout - closing one new and huge terminal at a time of an increased terrorist alert would have been on news. It had been closed for 6 hours when we were there. Police armed everywhere

Your ma and I can recommend business class! We were on a brand new 747-400 and after a dinner of salmon roulade followed by fillet steak plus champagne and glass of excellent chardonnay - to bed with Temazepam - we woke up 2hrs-31mins from Singapore - a 12 hour journey feeling great. The faces on baggage class said it all - haggard as you can visualise.

James recommended a shower so we went to BA business lounge - great shower facilities - the lady also gave me a comb for my hair. These lounges as a boon as you can relax over a coffee and read papers.

It was only 7 hours to Sydney but seemed the longest as it was dark and it was our daytime UK - we arrived at 6am and it was sticky as they have had some rain.

I have no idea how BA loses money as Plane was packed in all classes - pretty professional standard and food cordon bleau - to your Mas delight - it will be all down hill now as crash diet of salads and fruit. Ma has suicide stairs to traverse to the bedroom which are positively dangerous.

We took a taxi and now in Rocks to Junes cottage - using an apple computer - the key board is very ergonomically attractive - this is new state of art a she is in arty tarty scene and also best printers etc . Similar computer to Angela's kids - she is using Firefox/Morzilla

She left us loads of fruit plus 2 bottles of wine and milk .

We had to go to supermarket even though tired - the place was deserted as they have developed a UK trait in taking a "sicky" prior to Australia day tomorrow a public holiday - Australia day - these were the words of a female bus driver who gave us a free ride up George street to Coles the supermarket.

We intended to stay up all day but gave in as exhausted so we are going to awake half the night here.

We can hear the laughter next door as they are having a barbecue - gay couple who own a restaurant - one is from Wales and we got on fine last visit but no time as yet to say hello.

Ma is watching a 70 inch TV - sky is similar to UK in the front room . No Dickinson's real deal - her favourite but other BBC masterpieces from daytime TV.

We are going out for a walk in the dark to circular quays . They are getting ready for tomorrow.

more late r

promise not to complain about heat due 31 tomorrow.

Friday 22nd Jan

Philippa arrived to stay overnight - at home with ma watching Real Deal!

Ma went to HRI yesterday and they were concerned about flight as her blood was at 1.2% instead of target 2.5-3. This meant she was not fully anticoagulated so i have inject her even on plane - we have been given a letter as we will be carrying syringes and needles.

Phil is having a drink with me tonight at slubbers - the punters will think it is Murphy family week as Chris stayed overnight on Wed and he had a pint in subbers also . He looked very distinguished in a beautiful Austin Reed suit - where are Dewhirsts i ask .

Chris said Phil would seek a job when she got bored - well her new psychiatrist told her to look for a job and forget moving . She is going to sign on at agency tomorrow .

I should be in shock as i collected australian dollars at bank and got £200 less on 1k due to exchange rate.

I am still using public library as no broadband - the weather in Sydney is 41 today so i will think of you all
